As mentioned in a previous blog post, in February of 2020, the USMLE Program announced that it planned to change the Step 1 examination from a three-digit scoring system to a pass/fail scoring system, advising would not occur prior to January 1, 2022. The reasons for the decision included the consideration that residency programs were placing far too great an emphasis on Step 1 scores.
Today, the USMLE Program announced that the transition to pass/fail will be applied to examinations administered on or after January 26, 2022. The Step 2 CK examination will continue to be evaluated on a three-digit scoring system, and it is likely that, after the January 2021 transition, residency programs will place a greater emphasis on Step 2 CK scores when evaluating applicants for training.
