Our law firm remains one of the few in the country with substantial experience (and since 2009) in assisting and representing medical students, medical school graduates, IMGs, residents, and fellows in their dealings with the National Residency Match Program (“NRMP”), and we continue to dedicate various articles in this blog to those seeking residency or fellowship training through the Match.  Whether by providing tips for avoiding Match Violations (including by way of timely withdraw from the Match) and or best practices when certifying a rank order list, our office continues to provide support and legal representation to clients navigating the difficult and complex process of becoming a licensed U.S physician.

Today, NRMP announced release of the 2022 Main Residency Match Results and Data Report, which can be found here.  More than 39,000 doctors (out of 47,675 registrants) matched with residency training programs, with 99.6% of all positions filled after SOAP.  61.4% of U.S. citizen IMGs matched, while the non-U.S. citizen IMG match rate increased by 3.3% over 2021 to 58.1%.  Internal Medicine and Family Medicine again led the way with positions offered and filled. For the first time in more than 35 years, Emergency Medicine fill rates decreased, representing less interest in the specialty.

For the 2022 Match cycle, our law firm:

  • successfully sought and obtained Match commitment waivers/Match waivers for multiple clients;
  • successfully defended Match waiver applications made by residency training programs, including in instances where the waiver was sought because the program director claimed our client had violated the Match Agreement. In such cases, the NRMP required the Program honor its binding Match commitment.
  • successfully defended a Match waiver application where the Program contended the candidate was ineligible to train. Our firm argued that the Program’s interpretation of an eligibility rule was misapplied, and NRMP agreed, resulting in the requirement that the Program honor the Match commitment and allow for our client to begin training on time;
  • successfully defended claims of Match Violation, resulting in no disciplinary being imposed.
  • counseled dozens of clients who had questions and sought advice and counsel in order to make informed decisions about their training and career paths, many of whom were kind enough to leave reviews on Google and Avvo describing their experiences with our firm.

If you have any questions regarding NRMP or the Match, including for the upcoming 2023 Main Residency Match, our experienced attorneys stand ready to assist.
