With registration for the 2023 NRMP Main Residency Match opening soon, candidates rush to assure their application is contained with the first batch reviewed by Program Directors. Our firm has seen, on multiple occasions, candidates for residency positions finding themselves ineligible, disqualified, or subject to waiver requests and Match Violation allegations down the road solely because, in their haste, they did not take the proper care when preparing their application and application-related documents.
To assist applicants with the process, NRMP has published a Main Residency Match Applicant Checklist. The checklist, which can be found here, contains information about registration, ranking, and results, and also provides helpful links to information within the NRMP site. Applicants would be well served to also review our Tips for Avoiding a Match Violation, published previously within this blog. And when certifying your Rank Order, make sure you meet all eligibility requirements and that you are actually ready, willing and able to train with each and every program you rank.
Questions or concerns about the Match? Our experienced attorneys have, on multiple occasions:
- Successfully defended clients accused of violating NRMP’s Match policies.
- Successfully obtained Match waivers on behalf of our clients, resulting in the client’s release from the previously binding match commitment.
- Successfully opposed waiver requests filed by residency training programs, thereby requiring the program to fulfil its match commitment and offer employment to, and train, our clients.
- Successfully overturned, by way of application for reconsideration, the approval of a waiver request granted to a program for release from a match commitment, resulting in our client, who had previously lost their opposition to the program’s waiver request, being employed by and training with the program that sought and was initially granted the waiver.
- Successfully defended clients accused of violating the Match, including where the alleged violation arose out of a program’s request for waiver and the waiver was granted. The NRMP, despite granting the waiver, declined to make a finding of Match Violation, and our client obtained a substitute training position with days after the ruling.
- Successfully defended clients who, in their own waiver requests or responses to waiver requests, made statements that caused the NRMP to make allegations of a Match Violation, resulting in no finding of a violation by our client.
